Vein Education
Venous insufficiency is the term used to describe
a variety of symptoms and findings which result from the failure
of the valves in the superficial veins of the leg. This
valvular failure leads to blood flowing the wrong way in these
veins, distention of these veins, and subsequently all the symptoms
of pain, swelling, varicose veins, thrombophlebitis (clotting)
and skin damage and ulceration that can result. These
problems also lead to the development of unsightly bulging varicose
veins and also the smaller "spider veins" that is a
cosmetic concern for many active people. The veins that most often
fail are called the Great Saphenous Vein which travels on the
inner aspect of the thigh and calf just under the skin. Another
important vein is called the Lesser Saphenous Vein which travels
on the back of the calf. Other patients suffer from failure
of large branches of these veins, or of "perforator" veins
which connect the superficial veins to the high pressure deep
veins of the leg. At the Center for Advanced Vein Therapy
we offer very effective treatments for all these problems.
To determine the exact cause of your particular problem, a medical
consultation will be done, often followed by a detailed ultrasound
examination in our office. This will permit a precise diagnosis
and treatment plan to be recommended for your problem.
